Generative engine optimization (GEO) is a term for work aimed at improving your content’s visibility in AI search experiences (1). Its sibling term, answer engine optimization (AEO), is used in the same way.
Start with the groundwork in our earlier article: Practical steps for generative engine optimization in 2026
What exactly is generative engine optimization, and how does it relate to SEO?
From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and so it remains SEO (1). For your site, this means applying existing SEO best practices to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no additional requirements or other special optimizations (2).
Keep the retrieval and eligibility requirements in this explanation scoped to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode; do not treat them as access rules for other AI search services.
How do generative AI search features pick the pages they show, which is what GEO tries to influence?
Google describes retrieval-augmented generation, also called grounding, as the technique that lets its AI features rely on core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date web pages from the Search index (1). The systems then review the specific information in those pages to generate a response, and show prominent, clickable links to pages that support it.
AI Overviews and AI Mode may also use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics and data sources (2). Google says its models identify more supporting pages while generating responses, and it can display a wider set of links than a classic web search.
For eligibility as a supporting link in AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet (2).
Two concepts behind how generative search selects pages
| Concept | What it means |
|---|---|
| Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) | A technique, also called grounding, in which Google's core Search ranking systems retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages from the Search index. The systems then review them to generate a response with clickable links to supporting pages. |
| Query fan-out | AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response. |
Can GEO guarantee that my page appears in AI answers?
No: a GEO offer should not promise that Google will crawl, index or serve your content, because meeting all requirements and best practices does not guarantee those outcomes (2).
Per Google, AI Overviews are only shown when its systems determine they are additive to classic Search, so they often do not trigger at all (2). Its SEO starter guide adds that there are no secrets that will automatically rank a site first, and that following best practices will hopefully make it easier for search engines to crawl, index and understand content (3).
Recala does not guarantee rankings or AI citations.
